Overage

Overage is the charge a customer incurs when their usage exceeds what their plan includes, billed at a defined per-unit rate for the excess. A plan might include 10,000 API calls a month; the 10,001st and beyond bill at, say, $0.01 each. Overage is how usage-based and hybrid pricing models handle demand above the committed baseline without forcing an immediate plan change. Done well, it's a smooth pressure-release valve: customers aren't cut off mid-month, and consistent overage naturally signals it's time to upsell them to a bigger plan. Done badly, it produces bill shock - the surprise invoice that erodes trust and triggers churn far worse than a hard cap would. The craft is in the guardrails: notify customers as they approach limits, show usage in real time, offer to auto-upgrade rather than silently metering charges, and consider soft caps for price-sensitive segments. Overage should feel like a fair top-up for value received, never like a penalty sprung after the fact.
