Glossary ↗Product-Qualified Lead (PQL)
A product-qualified lead (PQL) is a user who has experienced meaningful value inside your product - usually through a free trial or freemium tier - and shown behavior that signals readiness to buy. It's the product-led counterpart to the older marketing-qualified lead (MQL) and sales-qualified lead (SQL), which score prospects on demographics and marketing engagement before they've ever used anything. A PQL is qualified by what they did: hit a usage threshold, invited teammates, connected an integration, or bumped into a plan limit. This matters because product usage is a far stronger buying signal than a downloaded ebook - PQLs convert at dramatically higher rates, so sales time spent on them is better spent. To operationalize PQLs you define the behaviors that historically precede paid conversion, instrument the product to detect them, and route qualifying accounts to sales or to a targeted in-app upgrade prompt. The hard part is honest scoring: pick signals that actually predict revenue, then keep validating them against real conversion data.
