Time-to-Value (TTV)

Time-to-value (TTV) is how long it takes a new user or customer to reach the first moment your product delivers real, perceived value - from signup to that initial payoff. It's one of the highest-leverage metrics in self-serve SaaS because the clock is unforgiving: every step, form field, integration, or confusing screen between signup and value is a place where users drop off and never come back. Shorter TTV correlates strongly with better activation, trial conversion, and long-term retention. There are two useful flavors: time to first value (the first small win) and time to full value (the product doing its whole job). You shorten TTV by ruthlessly cutting onboarding friction - pre-filling data, offering templates and sample content, deferring setup that isn't needed yet, and guiding users straight to their aha moment. Measure it as a real distribution, not an average, and watch where users stall; the biggest retention gains usually come from collapsing the gap between signed up and got value.
