Value Metric

A value metric is the unit you charge for — the thing your pricing scales on, like seats, API calls, contacts stored, or gigabytes processed. Choosing it well is arguably the single most important pricing decision a SaaS makes, because a good value metric aligns what customers pay with the value they get: as they succeed with your product, they naturally consume more and pay more, without a hard upsell. Slack charges per active user, Twilio per message, Snowflake per compute-second. A weak value metric (e.g., a flat fee unrelated to usage) leaves expansion revenue on the table and makes churn feel like a cliff rather than a dial. Practical test: your value metric should be easy for customers to understand, hard to game, and grow with their account. Builders often start with a proxy (seats) and layer in a usage-based value metric later, once they learn what actually drives value.
