Design Partner

A design partner is an early customer who works closely with you to shape a product before it's fully built, in exchange for early access, influence over the roadmap, and often discounted or free usage. Unlike a beta tester who just reports bugs, a design partner co-defines the problem: you sit in their workflow, watch how they actually operate, and build against real needs instead of assumptions. Why it matters: for a new product, three to five committed design partners give you the tight feedback loop that turns a vague idea into something a market will pay for — and they frequently become your first paying customers and reference logos. Practical note: choose partners who genuinely feel the pain and match your ideal customer profile, not just anyone willing to talk. Set expectations in writing (cadence, what you'll build, what they'll commit), and avoid over-fitting to a single partner's edge cases — you're building a product, not a bespoke tool for one company.
